How to troubleshoot a malfunctioning air conditioning unit

Troubleshooting Air Conditioner That's Not Working has to be done carefully. If your air conditioner is not working then there can be several reasons. Try these few troubleshooting steps in attempt to identify the cause and revolve the issue:

Start first with checking the thermostat and see if it is working properly. When looking at your thermostat, make sure that it is set to cool and that the fan is on ‘auto’. If either of these things are off, it can cause problems with performance.

Make sure that there is nothing near the air conditioner that can offset the thermostat (a computer, an ice box, a tv, etc) –this can make your AC work harder than it needs to and can make it overwork.

If your thermostat seems to be working fine, then move on to the next step. If you have an outside condenser unit, check to see if it’s turning or not.

If the outside unit isn’t turning or working in any way, make sure the batteries in your thermostat are working properly. If they aren’t, replacing them could fix your problem.

If you have changed the batteries but your air conditioner still isn’t working, there could be a problem with your electrical component.

It’s important to remember that when working with electrical components you must be very careful. If you are not confident in your ability to work with electrical equipment or materials, then don’t! And call a professional air conditioning contractor.

Otherwise check to make sure that electricity is running to your air conditioner – to do this, make certain that nothing could be blocking the electricity – or that it didn’t accidentally fall out of the outlet or has been chewed on by a small rodent or pet.

If your air conditioner has electricity running to it, the condenser is working fine, and the thermostat is functional, then calling a professional is your best bet.
